Site Description

This survey site was a moth paradise! Lots of mature trees, all moth host plants, were plentiful at this property. A secluded yard with a pond and ducks with just enough grassy areas to sit outside and enjoy a warm summery night. A creek was at one edge of the property, the other sloped upward into a stand of trees. The area was rural with pastures and farmlands. The backyard was like a private park. Many huge hickory and walnut trees on the property.

Comments

The backyard was like a private park. My timing was perfect for multiple Imperial Moths which were agreeable to being photographed. The first night I set up near the house and off into a stand of trees that was edged by a swift creek. The second night I opted to set up one sheet underneath an oak tree. A good mix of micro and macro moths and everything in between. Both nights had good turnouts with the weather being hot, humid, and no passing storms. The ducks tucked themselves into their home at dusk and didn’t mind me walking the yard. My impression of the yard was that it is a multi-season mothing location and would be the kind of place I would call home if I were a moth.
