North Carolina Moth Project

The North Carolina Moth Project  is a citizen science project by Backyard Butterflies, a nonprofit organization based in Hillsborough, NC. The NC Moth Project is an umbrella project that includes the North Carolina Under-reported County Mothing Project (NCUCMP), a state-wide citizen science project that provides an incredible opportunity for anyone who loves moths to participate in a large-scale, multi-year survey.

The NC Moth Project focuses on specific moth education, community outreach, and citizen science activities such as moth nights and NCUCMP surveys. Participants of NC Moth Project events will learn the basics of light trapping moths, photography techniques, and how to make preliminary identifications using iNaturalist, online resources, and traditional printed field guides.

Moths are an essential part of multiple ecosystems. The importance of surveying moths is vital to increase awareness and understanding of moth populations, ranges, and how to support their life cycles by providing abundant host trees and plants in one’s backyard or property.

The NC Moth Project, NCUCMP, and the parent organization Backyard Butterflies supports diversity, equity, and inclusion.  All NC Moth Project, NCUCMP, and Backyard Butterflies activities, events, and programs are safe and welcoming spaces for all people. We encourage all identities, orientations, races,  and abilities to participate.
