Located outside of Wilson, NC, in the small town of Elm City, the property was tucked away near a dead end road that was adjacent to Route 301 and railroad tracks. Nearby were some houses and farmlands. The house itself was surrounded by a stand of trees with a mix of young and older trees. The lot next to the property was vacant and had mowed trails and young growth trees, mostly pines. Flowering plants in the area were scarce and limited to exotics; vegetables gardens were noted, as well as large areas of managed lawns.
The first night of the survey was quite mothy and beetle-y. It was noted that the majority of moths were micros. Weather conditions were clear, no chances of storms, hot and humid. The second night was a bit cooler and less humid. The moth turn out was dismal with only about 5-10% of the previous night’s moths making an appearance. The surveyed was concluded early on the second night around midnight due to the poor turn-out.
